Belize 2018

Maya Field Workshop in Belize March 10 -18 2018

Including visits to:

Cahal Pech

Caracol

Xunantunich

Naranjo

Nakum

Lamanai

Our spring 2018 Maya Field Workshop will focus for the first time on the major kingdoms of Belize and the eastern Petén. Over the course of six days we will visit Caracol and Naranjo, two dynastic powerhouses of Classic Maya civilization, as well as a number of other nearby ruins that at one time or another were allied with these great centers, such as Xunantunich, Nakum, Cahal Pech, and Lamanai.

In very recent years this entire region has proved vital for revealing new insights into the nature of ancient Maya political history and its changes over the centuries. The area was a crossroads for shifting alliances between rival kingdoms, with Tikal and Kaanul (Dzibanche and Calakmul) controlling many of the networks in the 7th, 8th and 9th.
We will examine the newest archaeological and textual finds at these sites, and put them in broader historical and archaeological context.
David Stuart has been at the forefront of formulating and studying many of these new ideas, and will share his very latest thinking with the workshop participants. To do so we will learn how to read Maya hieroglyphs, decode iconography, and how to apply some of the newest technologies to the study of the ancient Maya.
Join us in Belize and Guatemala for what will prove to be one of the best MFWs ever!
